Wairakei Golf Course
Imagine the experience of playing golf on a world class championship course, immersed in the natural beauty of a wildlife sanctuary. Many find sanctuary on a golf course but it is rare to find a golf course that is a sanctuary.
Golf and Sanctuary
Wairakei lies on 180 hectares of natural rolling countryside, 6460 metres from championship tees with 108 large well placed bunkers and was developed to meet the rigorous design standards required for world-class championship competitions.
Wairakei golf course has been skillfully designed to blend with the surrounding native bush. Prolific birdsong, picturesque scenery and a unique pest-proof sanctuary (the first of its kind) has led to Wairakei being recognised as New Zealand’s number one golf course.
The predator free sanctuary offers a safe haven to fallow deer and many birdlife including mixed colour pheasants, guinea fowl, peking ducks and our nation’s icon, the kiwi, which are all free to roam around the course.
Navigate your way through 18 testing holes of exceptional beauty and listen to the cacophony of birdlife, the meandering streams, the delightful waterfalls …
Wairakei has long been a firm favourite with golf fans in New Zealand and a must-play for internationals visiting the Taupo region. But it is more than a golf course; nowadays Wairakei doubles as a sanctuary.
